Vertbags’ Favorite Apps

The Vert team (AKA “Vertbags) works with apps and we still can’t get enough of them on our phones! Finding cool new apps is one of our geeky hobbies, it also helps us stay on top of the latest trends in the industry. Our favorite apps change on almost a weekly basis, however, we wanted to share what is super cool in our app world this week.
- Kevin Planovsky: I am going to say Evernote (iOS | Android). Been following it for years, just recently started using it and am blown away. No wonder they are Inc.’s Company of the Year! Truly multi-modal usage across mobile, desktop, tablet, browser, etc. Perfect for capturing & organizing ideas for Christmas gifts!
- Michael Lentz: Favorite Application = Scoutmob (iOS | Android). Here’s why I like it! 1. Ridiculous deals on local businesses I would actually use, 2. Innovative approach to the “daily deals” concept, 3. Functional mobile application with the ability to find “nearest deals” based on my location, 4. The apps were built with Appcelerator Titanium using web technologies.
- Matt Griffin: I can’t just pick one… Feedly (iOS | Android) – Super cool blog aggregator that shows me awesome news & Hanging with Friends (iOS | Android) – Keep in touch with friends via game yay, cross-platform = win.
- Ashley Twist: My favorite mobile app of the moment is an app called “Go Try It On (iOS).” It’s a fashion application where you can post pictures of your outfits and get feedback from other users. You can also comment on and review other people’s outfits, as well as give advice. This app helps you decide to “wear it” or “change it” based on votes from the community. I’m addicted to it right now! It’s also great for inspiration.
- Lauren Leschper: My favorite mobile application is Untappd (iOS | Android), which allows you to share and rate the beer you’re drinking. The app provides another social aspect for beer drinkers, especially those who are interested in craft and rare brews. They launched as a mobile web app, and only recently added native Android and iPhone applications.
- Chris Lentz: Reeder (iPhone | iPad), is an excellent app for aggregating all of your favorite blog news feeds. It works with Google Reader so you are able to access all of your feeds even when you are away from the Reeder app. It is available on the Mac and iOS and works with all the popular bookmarking services (Evernote, Read It Later, Instapaper, Delicious…) for hold something for future reading.
- Kristin Donaldson: I couldn’t chose between one that I loved the most. I am addicted to Instagram (iOS); I think it is so interesting to follow friends and people from around the world through photos. My other favorite app is WhatsApp (iOS | Android), if you communicate with people outside of the country this is the cheapest form of communication through texting and picture sharing at $0.99 one time purchasing fee!
These are just a few of our favorites, but we would love to hear about what you think is totally awesome, let us know, don’t keep all the cool apps to yourself!

Pandora is defiantly towards the top of my list. I am not sure how that one didn’t make the Vert list. We listen to Pandora & Spotify all day everyday in the office.

I agree with both comments! I am a huge fan of TED. Also, under in the iPod app on the iPhone, there s a section called iTunes U. This is recorded lectures and videos from Ivey League schools and free lectures on almost any category imaginable.
Another one I love for photo editing is Camera+ and Diptic.

Android:
TuneIn Radio is a great app and there are streams from all over the world that I can listen to.
Pandora is another good app I use when I am studying.
Android Lost is one that I have used several times. It allows you full control over your phone remotely if you lose it. Once when my phone was on silent I was able to control the volume from my laptop and cause it to ring. If I were to lose it anywhere I can remote wipe and even lock it. Even better I can track it via gps and take pictures to help track down where it’s at or the person that may have taken it.
There are a few more that I can mention but they are primarily computer/network security focused.
For my iPad I have several:
PS Express which is a light version of photoshop for your images. Comes in very handy when I need to make a quick edit or change to photos.
I love my ETrade app. I can set alerts if there are any changes for stock that I own.
Fruit Ninja is another fun mindless app that I am slightly addicted to. Perfect when I am just needing to fill time.
Instagram is another good one that I am starting to use. I love seeing the creativity out there all over the world.
Ambiance is a great app to help me rest.
Entrepreneur is one of my favs since I get the whole magazine but in a digital format. LOVE IT!
TED is one other app I love to use. Great inspirational pieces.
Seriously… The list can go on.
